Where we Belong
Alejandra Carles-Tolrá's first book Where We Belong explores themes of belonging, femininity and escape through the representation of a group of Jane Austen fans. The "Jane Austen Pineapple Appreciation Society" is a group of people who share a great passion for the 19th century English author. The members of the society, who call themselves "Janeites", have created a community of like-minded and like-minded people with whom to celebrate the writer's work. Since its inception more than two years ago, the society has built a strong network of support and sisterhood, creating strong bonds between its members.
Through her work, the author explores how the sense of security and belonging offered by specific groups can empower individuals and strengthen their own identity. Alejandra uses physical and psychological closeness to show the intense relationships that are fostered within these communities and to represent the existential need to belong, while inviting the viewer to question where the show begins and where it ends, and where the boundaries between past and present, and between reality and imagination, lie.
The book includes a text by Shoair Mavlian, director of The Photographer's Gallery in London.
